Our services should not be used if the applicant or minor has been convicted of a crime, has claimed bankruptcy, has judgments or liens against them, is not a U.S. citizen, or is a registered sex offender. Requirements to File for a Change of Name for an Adult in Georgia

Georgia law requires certain things before you can file for a name change and/or during the name change process in Georgia. These requirements include:

  • You (the Petitioner) must be an adult.
  • The only way someone can obtain a name change in the State of Georgia is if the change of name is being requested by someone who has been a resident of the State of Georgia for a minimum of six (6) months. You must be a resident of Georgia in order for a Georgia Court to have jurisdiction to hear your case. You will file this action in the County where you reside. If you are a resident of a military base in the State of Georgia, then you must be a resident of the State of Georgia for a minimum of one (1) year.
  • You must have proper and reasonable cause for the requested change of name.
  • You are not changing your name to avoid debts, to defraud creditors or to infringe upon the rights of others.
  • Again, please remember, our form services are ONLY designed to cover simple, uncontested name change actions. Our forms services should not be used if you have been convicted of a crime, have claimed bankruptcy, have judgments or liens against you, are not a U.S. citizen, or you are a registered sex offender. Instead, you should consider contacting an attorney in your area. These circumstances could cause complications, which may result in your action being denied and/or contested.
